YULETIDE SALES, LESSONS LEARNT

A happy new year to you all, trust you doing great. The last time we had a post here was last year.

To start this year, we want to take a good look at some lessons learnt from the poor sales experienced by many poultry farmers last year especially during the festive season. Alot of complains have ensured from the poor sales farmers witnessed during the last festive season as result of this and more, we have compiled some lessons we have learnt which we believe will help to forestall a re-occurrence.

There was less money to spend: Compared to previous seasons where many people had money to buy as much birds as possible for the festive season, this past year, due to the effect of the COVID-19 and the poor state of the economy, many people could not afford it, some even saw it as a luxury, alternative means were sought.

Many people reared birds themselves: I don’t know if you noticed that some people took the risk and reared some birds themselves hoping to reduce cost, they might not have achieved good success with the birds in terms of management, but they sure saved some cash from doing so, by so doing reduced the number of birds demanded.

Poor feasibility studies: Many farmers felt they could sell their birds just the same way they did the last time, many were waiting to start selling a week to Christmas, but it didn’t go down well. 3 weeks after Christmas, I can tell you that a lot of farmers still have birds they have not sold. It would have been far better if they started selling 2-3 weeks before the yuletide. Animal husbandry is all about targets, many farmers raised animals without specific targets, thus incurring avoidable losses. High cost of birds. Unfortunately, alot of people, over priced their birds, with the high cost of feeds and even the birds at DOC at some point, an average farmer spent between 2000-2500 on each bird, if they sold each bird at 3500 with a profit of 1000 per bird, it would have made some sense, but many increased the prices so much leading to boycott, now they had to reduce the prices, they did that at a loss.It was gathered that the re-opening of the land borders allowed frozen birds to be moved in thus crashing the price of birds.

All said and one, these are some lessons we learnt, hopefully we can learn from that and move on.

FORMULATING FEED FOR YOUR ANIMALS

It has been said over time that feeding alone accounts for close to or a little over 60% of animal production, whether ruminants or non-ruminants The act of making the animals have access to the feed is called  FEEDING. Today, there are many ready made feeds available, some companies are at the top of this ladder, companies like Top Feeds and the rest. Some private feedmills do produce their own feed for commercial Purposes, and reports show that their feeds are quite okay. Today, we will be discussing how to formulate feed for poultry and pigs. To adequately formulate feed for your animals, the following should be put into consideration. - Age of the animal - Nutritional needs of the animal. - Availability of the raw materials - Cost and quality of the raw material. Poultry feed is divided into Chick mash should contain 20-24% crude protein and 2800-2900kcal of energy Starter feed 20-24% crude protein and 2900-3100kcal of energy Growers feed should have Protein content of about 16...

WASTE TO WEALTH IN AGRICULTURE

In animal husbandry, it has been agreed with proof that feeding alone takes over 60% of the total production costs. With continual rise in prices of conventional feed ingredients it has become imperative to device other cheaper but effective means to make feeds for livestock. One of these is the inclusion of industrial wastes in animal feed production. Although a number of factors affect the use of some of these materials, but with appropriate steps, they can be used with little or no side effects. Some of these wastes include: Rice and Corn bran Palm oil sludge Shea butter cake Brewery wastes Rice bran and corn bran can replace maize in animal diet and they cost less than 15% of the cost of maize, same thing with shea butter cake. Limiting factors in their uses include: High fibre contents High microbial load.    ...
