In animal husbandry, it has been agreed with proof that
feeding alone takes over 60% of the total production costs.
With continual rise in prices of conventional feed
ingredients it has become imperative to device other cheaper but effective means
to make feeds for livestock.
One of these is the inclusion of industrial wastes in animal
feed production. Although a number of factors affect the use of some of these
materials, but with appropriate steps, they can be used with little or no side
effects.
Some of these wastes include:
Rice and Corn bran
Palm oil sludge
Shea butter cake
Brewery wastes
Rice bran and corn bran can replace maize in animal diet and
they cost less than 15% of the cost of maize, same thing with shea butter cake.
Limiting factors in their uses include:
High fibre contents
High microbial load.
WAY
OUT
We take the high fibre, high microbes containing wastes
through the following processes
De-fibering: through
the use of suitable enzymes, they help speed up the breakdown of these
ingredients thus increasing their absorption level, sometimes soaking them with
microbial inoculants does help.
De-microbing: by
slightly heating some of them and increasing their acidic level to a level non-toxic
to the body, we achieve this.
With all said and done, we can achieve our goal of turning wastes
to wealth in Agriculture
