BOOST THE GROWTH OF YOUR BIRDS

Hello great farmer, trust you and your birds are doing well. Have you ever wondered why some birds did not grow or perform well? Have you ever wondered why some farmers make use of one booster or the other to make their birds grow fast?

Well there a number of factors why this happen, in as much as we all want our birds to grow quickly, I have never supported the use of BOOSTERS and some unethical methods. Before we go into the ways of making your birds grow fast, here are some reasons why your birds might not be growing well.

THREE REASONS WHY YOUR BIRDS ARE NOT GROWING WELL

1. Poor stock: The parent stock or hatchery operations was/were faulty, with this, there is little you can do order than to give your best management to them.

As such, it is expected you get your birds from reliable hatcheries with good track records of supplying quality birds.

2. Poor Feeding: Birds are garbage in garbage out, they respond to what you feed them, feeding alone accounts for over 60% of their overall production cost, serious care must be taken when feeding them, be sure they get the right amount of Energy, Protein and other feed minerals.

3. Too much microbial load: Some farms poorly handle their birds and this causes them to gather much microbes in their guts e.g. Coccidia parasite, with these microbes in their guts, they wont respond much to the management

FOUR WAYS TO INCREASE THE WEIGHT OF YOUR BIRDS

1. Feed ad libitum: You want your birds to grow fast and add weight? Then never starve them of water and feed, even at night.

At different stages of their lives, birds require different nutritional requirements,

Starter: Energy, 2900-3000kcal, Protein, 21-24%

Grower: Energy, 2550-2650kcal, Protein, 16-18%

Finisher: Energy, 3000-3300kcal, Protein, 17-20%

What you give to your birds as feed, goes a long way in determining their performance later in life.

2. Never allow microbial build up: To this end, its advisable you add grind ginger in their feed at the rate of 1kg per 100kg of feed. Ginger helps clear the guts of birds of microbes, giving the internal system enough room and space to function well.

For broilers, after the brooding apply ginger in the feed for 5 days, for pullets do that after they switch to growers mash. Be sure their pen is clean always, as you avoid microbial build up, ensure there are no parasitic invasions.

Always serve them clean and cool water free of dirt and germs, dehydrated birds wont give their best.

3. Sorting: Sort them regularly according to size, you might not need to weigh, visually, you should be able to pick them. Always stock birds of the same size together. Sort broilers every two weeks after their brooding and pullets once a month from 7 weeks upwards.

4. Dont joke with their vaccinations and medications: Be right on time when administering these vaccinations and even the medications, they do help in keeping the birds in good shape always.

Finally, when switching to new feed like from starter to grower or from Topfeeds to Ultima, always mix the two feeds for at least three days to allow the birds get used to the new feed before switching to full feeding.

YULETIDE SALES, LESSONS LEARNT

A happy new year to you all, trust you doing great. The last time we had a post here was last year. To start this year, we want to take a good look at some lessons learnt from the poor sales experienced by many poultry farmers last year especially during the festive season. Alot of complains have ensured from the poor sales farmers witnessed during the last festive season as result of this and more, we have compiled some lessons we have learnt which we believe will help to forestall a re-occurrence. There was less money to spend: Compared to previous seasons where many people had money to buy as much birds as possible for the festive season, this past year, due to the effect of the COVID-19 and the poor state of the economy, many people could not afford it, some even saw it as a luxury, alternative means were sought.  Many people reared birds themselves: I don’t know if you noticed that some people took the risk and reared some birds themselves hoping to reduce cost, they might not...
