YULETIDE SALES, LESSONS LEARNT

A happy new year to you all, trust you doing great. The last time we had a post here was last year.

To start this year, we want to take a good look at some lessons learnt from the poor sales experienced by many poultry farmers last year especially during the festive season. Alot of complains have ensured from the poor sales farmers witnessed during the last festive season as result of this and more, we have compiled some lessons we have learnt which we believe will help to forestall a re-occurrence.

There was less money to spend: Compared to previous seasons where many people had money to buy as much birds as possible for the festive season, this past year, due to the effect of the COVID-19 and the poor state of the economy, many people could not afford it, some even saw it as a luxury, alternative means were sought.

Many people reared birds themselves: I don’t know if you noticed that some people took the risk and reared some birds themselves hoping to reduce cost, they might not have achieved good success with the birds in terms of management, but they sure saved some cash from doing so, by so doing reduced the number of birds demanded.

Poor feasibility studies: Many farmers felt they could sell their birds just the same way they did the last time, many were waiting to start selling a week to Christmas, but it didn’t go down well. 3 weeks after Christmas, I can tell you that a lot of farmers still have birds they have not sold. It would have been far better if they started selling 2-3 weeks before the yuletide. Animal husbandry is all about targets, many farmers raised animals without specific targets, thus incurring avoidable losses. High cost of birds. Unfortunately, alot of people, over priced their birds, with the high cost of feeds and even the birds at DOC at some point, an average farmer spent between 2000-2500 on each bird, if they sold each bird at 3500 with a profit of 1000 per bird, it would have made some sense, but many increased the prices so much leading to boycott, now they had to reduce the prices, they did that at a loss.It was gathered that the re-opening of the land borders allowed frozen birds to be moved in thus crashing the price of birds.

All said and one, these are some lessons we learnt, hopefully we can learn from that and move on.

MARKETING IN AGRICULTURE

MARKETING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE Marketing is the art of making customers aware of a product and making them buy the product, this is a paraphrased definition of marketing by the International Strategic Management Institute (ISMI) of which am a proud member. Let me start by saying no enterprise can survive without a steady market for it products, no matter how good the products are, the enterprise will fold up if the market is not there. I usually recommend farm enterprises to have available market before they start production. If this is done, it will save the farmer a lot of headaches also prevent exploitation. Exploitation normally set in when farmers are desperate to dispose-off their goods to avoid spoilage. A professor of Animal Sciences, in person of Prof E.B Sonaiya once said and I quote ’’if you want to go into Agriculture, it better to start with marketing, this will give you good idea and knowledge of the market.
